General Accountability


Reporting to the Assistant Manager – Engineering Services, the incumbent is responsible for the engineering and implementation of systems for the measurement, monitoring, and analyses of noise/vibrations emanating from subway operations; and reducing/eliminating the negative impact of noise/vibrations on the surrounding residential and commercial neighborhoods. Representing Subway Infrastructure department in public meetings with various community groups and updating on the progress of technical initiatives for noise and vibration mitigation, as well evaluating the effectiveness of implemented solutions.

Key Job Functions


  • Managing a wide variety of noise and vibration related engineering activities for the Subway Infrastructure Department
  • Designing and implementing technically viable and cost effective methods for the collection of noise/vibration data and field measurements
  • Analyzing and interpreting complex information such as: field measurements and consultant reports, and converting them into practical, actionable, and cost effective engineering recommendations for reduction of noise and vibration complaints
  • Developing and applying models for the analysis of track vibration, sleeper vibration, and rail pad stiffness
  • Investigating, analyzing and recommending the implementation of suitable products, track and structural systems, to manage the effects of subway noise/vibrations on the basis of known and documented vibration generation mechanisms and sound engineering and scientific principles
  • Correlating condition and design of track (corrugation, stiffness, track geometry) and condition and design of wheels and vehicles (Wheel condition, brakes condition, noise of bogie and vehicle superstructure) to resulting noise and vibrations
  • Designing, implementing and maintaining a comprehensive database of measurements, experiments, relevant reports and correlating them to noise and vibration complaints
  • Participating in design reviews of new residential developments and modifications of existing structures on and around TTC Right of Way, and commenting on the predicted impact of these modifications and developments on subway generated noise and vibration propagation and amplification patterns
  • Collaborating with designers, developers, municipal entities, members of the public and elected representatives to manage the impact of subway generated noise and vibrations on new, modified, and existing structures
  • Creating technical specifications for material procurement of hardware and software needed for noise/vibration measurement and analysis
  • Creating technical specifications and participating in the evaluation and selection of various consultants and service providers related to noise/vibration measurement, analysis and mitigation
  • Identifying and keeping up to date with appropriate technical standards, by-laws, acts, regulations, guidelines and best practices for the control and management of subway noise and vibrations
  • Coordinating with consultants, internal and external stakeholders for track access and community notifications for measuring of track noise and vibrations
  • Preparing presentations and participating in community meetings as a technical subject matter expert
  • Assessing potential improvement by analyzing properties and performance characteristics of new fasteners, dampeners, pads, sound barriers, and variety of insulating materials for track and buildings
  • Assessing potential improvements by analyzing available maintenance operations on track and vehicles such as rail grinding, milling, lubrication, and wheel machining etc., prioritizing and advising on the most effective method for improvement
  • Preparing reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data and trends
  • Performing related duties as assigned
  • Responsible for treating passengers and/or employees with respect and dignity and ensuring the needs of passengers or employees with disabilities are accommodated and/or addressed in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code and Relate Orders so that they can fully benefit from the TTC as a service provider and an employer
  • Participation in the TTC's Customer Service Ambassador Program

Education and Experience


  • Completion of a post-secondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline or combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
  • A University Degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering or higher, combined with 10 years of engineering work experience and a minimum of 5 years of Noise and Vibration related engineering experience preferably in a railway environment
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario is required

Additional Requirements


  • Thorough knowledge of vibrations theory
  • Theoretical knowledge and practical experience of interface of wheel and rail, and track and rail vehicle design as applied to the science of track noise and vibrations
  • Good knowledge of mechanisms of ground bourn vibrations, wheel and rail radiation, curving behaviour, creep forces, frictional excitation, vibration propagation from tunnels, wheel shape and damping
  • Theoretical knowledge and experience in implementing mitigation measures and track designs for vibration isolation
  • Familiarity with construction related practices, codes, standards, regulations, and project management concepts involving several technical fields
  • Familiarity with union/trade collective bargaining agreements and construction contracts
  • Sound judgement; well-developed technical and analytical skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to multitask and prioritize competing assignments
  • Excellent team work and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to a non-technical audience
  • Must have good presentation skills and affinity for public speaking
  • Must possess excellent report writing and oral communication skills
  • Proficiency in the use of a PC as well as related software applications relevant to the work performed
  • Successfully complete various TTC training courses including Subway/SRT Rule Book training
  • Must have or acquire comprehensive knowledge of TTC organizational structure, operations, policies and practices applicable to the work performed
  • Must have or rapidly acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders including disability accommodation and accessibility requirements pertaining to passengers and employees
