This position is responsible for performing field, laboratory and office functions which support delivery of the environmental program, thereby ensuring that CST Canada Coal Limited (CST Coal) remains compliant with all legislative and policy requirements governing its’ Approval to operate issued under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA).


Reporting directly to the General Foreman, Environment, the incumbent may be accountable for assisting contractors, consultants, casual labor, students and/or on-site logistics as required.


Air Program (EPEA Section 4.2)

  • Responsible for inspection of CST Coal’s Air Monitoring Network;
  • Responsible for creating data entry and ongoing maintenance of a variety of program databases allowing timely responses to mitigate environmental impacts.

Mine Wastewater (EPEA Section 4.3)

  • Responsible for the inspection, collection and analysis of mine surface water handling facilities as well as the maintenance and calibration of all laboratory equipment. This includes compiling and reviewing data for submission of monthly Mine waste water report to meet approval requirements.
  • Responsible for ensuring adherence to established QA/QC of accepted laboratory practices.
  • Assist in compiling and analyzing data for monthly and annual reports for submission to regulatory bodies.
  • Responsible for operating, organizing and maintaining field equipment.

Soil and Groundwater Monitoring (EPEA Section 4.6 and 4.7)

  • Assist in the inspection, collection and analysis of groundwater monitoring stations as well as the maintenance and calibration of all laboratory equipment. This includes compiling and reviewing data for submission of the annual to meet approval requirements.
  • Responsible for ensuring adherence to established QA/QC of accepted laboratory practices.
  • Responsible for operating, organizing and maintaining field equipment.

Additional Duties

  • Responsible for assisting other staff in the collection of field samples, data entry, reviewing and comparing site specific technical data, and researching applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Responsible for performing other related duties as required.



A minimum two year technical diploma in Environmental Science, Wildlife or Resource Management is required.


No prior environmental field experience working in an industrial, government or scientific community is necessary, however prior experience would be considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Safety attitude and personal commitment to a zero incident work place
  • Scientific curiosity and strong research skills for both literature and survey techniques
  • Ability to operate all terrain and four wheel drive vehicles in a variety of environmental conditions
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to work in a laboratory and outdoors setting with minimal supervision
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Good observational skills and the ability to use binoculars and spotting scope
  • Good map reading and compass skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills due to exposure to a variety of scientific disciplines
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and multi-task in an environment with changing priorities with minimal warning


The incumbent needs to be able to:

  • handle loads over 20 kg. in weight

  • maintain a license/certification and operate a vehicle requiring a Class 5 license including ATV’s, i.e. quad, snowmobile

  • regularly engage in physical exertion, i.e. shovel, lift and/or carry heavy materials

  • concentrate for over 60 consecutive minutes

  • work in environmental extremes for over 60 consecutive minutes

  • sit for over 60 consecutive minutes

  • listen for quiet sounds


The incumbent works at the CST Coals Mine Site facility and will be required to traverse by motorized vehicle, ATV or on foot, CST Coal’s coal leases as a regular function of the job. The shift schedule is a 4 day-on/3 day-off rotation (40 hour schedule), including weekends. Overtime and being on stand-by or ready for call-outs may be required due to the nature of the work.

He/she is in an office setting 30% of the time and outdoors 70% of the time and may be exposed to fire, smoke, fumes, odors or chemicals associated with laboratory analysis and rough and steep terrain. Travel may be required outside the work area in order to attend conferences, courses or meetings.

As a condition of employment, the incumbent is required to comply with pre and post employment drug and alcohol testing as per the Drug and Alcohol Policy. As required, personal protective equipment will include the use of an approved hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe boots, hearing protection, CSA approved respiratory protection, protective clothing and gloves, personal flotation device, hip waders, goggles and ATV helmet. Vaccinations for rabies, hepatitis and tetanus are required.
