Individuals in these higher level leadership positions commonly have titles attached to the position such as Group Lead placing them in a position where corporate expectations are high and with increased personal responsibility, commitment and accountability with regards to developing business and financial strategies for their Group, monitoring goals and adjusting policies to meet them, working closely with the team to attain goals, and advising about staffing and other organizational resources. This position is responsible for the Business Group’s annual budget.

Reporting directly to the CEO and President, the Director, Equipment and Yard provides leadership in the entire department’s operation through the following direct reports: Dredging Equipment Manager, Construction Equipment Manager, Yard Manager, and Buyer.


  • In this position you will provide a leadership example and model that includes commitment and integrity that is consistent with FRPD’s culture and values
  • Works with other departmental managers and personnel to implement plans and policies throughout the organisation
  • Works collaboratively and respectfully across all business groups, able to bring issues to conclusion through consensus or informed decision-making processes
  • Monitors and track progress toward goals based on measure analytics
  • Provide data and budgets for all equipment costs and equipment capital investment requirements, participate in the development of the annual company budget
  • Provide quarterly updates, operational reports and forecast against budget
  • Determines ways to reduce costs, reduce safety/environmental incidents and improve overall company performance
  • Proactively identifies and intervenes in situations requiring resolution and follows through in a timely manner to reach conclusions
  • Represents and promotes the company at conferences, meetings, and other industry events
  • Maintains in-depth knowledge of the industry and liaises with specialised colleagues for expert advice on financial, legal, and regulatory issues
  • Directly accountable to all aspects of Group performance including yearly budgets, health & safety, environmental and quality, ensuring requirements of the company are met and that procedures and policies are followed including introducing or revising existing ones as required.
  • Encourage and orchestrating career development efforts including identifying training needs.
  • Responsible for contributing to the corporate succession plan by developing ultimately implementing a succession plan for the E&Y Group
  • Participates in the periodic reviews of corporate procedures and policies and recommends or implements changes to ensure such documents remain compliant and relevant
  • Create a culture of performance by leading the group’s PDR process; effectively cascade the division’s goals and establish impactful development programs as well as firm corrective measures
  • To take on the role as the Transport Canada AR for all FRPD vessels
  • Working with direct reports and other senior staff, this position is accountable to the following:
    • Ensure all FRPD vessels/equipment are registered and have the required insurance coverages
    • Review and approve all major rentals, including reporting to Insurance providers
    • Claims management, report and manage all equipment insurance claims
    • Ensure all equipment is being maintained to regulatory standards
    • Ensure quality control systems are in place to track all repairs/maintenance and to provide a measurable level of quality
    • Accountable to oversee all FRPD equipment repairs
    • Oversee and support the FRPD purchasing department


Education and Experience

  • 12+ years of experience successfully managing construction and marine fleets – preference will be given to candidates with direct experience in managing fleets with In-class vessels
  • Degree or diploma in related engineering discipline and/or
    • Holder of a certificate (e.g. marine engineer, welder, mechanic or crane operator)
    • 5 years+ experience in a progressive management position with preference for senior management position

Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

  • Proven leadership and business acumen and track record of success and accomplishment
  • Ability to build and lead high performing teams
  • Ability to read and interpret financial statements
  • Must have a good understanding of Transport Canada or equivalent marine regulations
  • Ability to read and interpret supplier contracts, design drawings and specifications
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office, Excel, Adobe)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong work ethic, multi-tasking and interpersonal skills
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to recognize, evaluate and mitigate potential risks
  • Has demonstrated leadership skills in managing change and driving continuous improvement; creative, highly motivated with superior organizational skills, results orientated and committed to team success
  • Must have a valid class 5 driver’s license



  • Ability to travel as required by the role

Working Hours

  • Available 24/7 for emergency calls
  • Work extended hours when required

  • Level of experience will determine base compensation
